Pitch: Indonesia wastes about 300 kilograms of food per person every year, making it among the largest food wasters in the world. ‘The Food Guardian’ (Garda Pangan) aims to tackle Indonesia’s food waste problem by collecting food remnants from culinary business, hotels, or catering to then redistribute them to poor communities in East Java. Founded in 2017, the enterprise has collected up to 19 tons of food and distributed them to over 100 thousands of people. During the pandemic, the enterprise has been busy donating meals to people all over the city. Experts asserted that food loss is equivalent to nutrition loss and environment loss. This issue can become the culprit towards national food insecurity, as well high rates of undernutrition and overweight, especially during a limited food accessibility in times of pandemic.
