Ngurah Rai Airport Security and Denpasar Quarantine Agency officer managed to foil attempted smuggle of a baby orangutan to Russia, by a Russian, Andrei Zhetkov, on Friday 22 march 2019 at 22.30 local time. The baby orangutan was found heavily sedated and put onto rattan box in a bag to be taken to Russia.

 

This failed smuggling attempt begun when airport officers grew suspicious of a bag carried by Andrei after it passed the X-ray machine. At first, airport officers was reluctant to open the bag, because they were told that an aggressive monkey was inside the bag and managed to get out at the boarding room.

 

Airport officer then took the bag to examination room, and it was then revealed that there was a protected baby orangutan inside the bag. Andrei told the police that he bought the orangutan for 3 thousand dollar in traditional market in java, before taken to Bali. The 2 years old male orangutan was sedated and expected to be unconscious for more or less, 10 hours.

 

Denpasar Police chief Ruddy Setyawan said that based on the investigation, the suspect would re-sell the orangutan in Russia. The suspect violates article 21 verse 2 A and C, regulation number 5 year 1990 about conservation and natural resources, with potential punishment 5 years in prison and 100 million rupiah fine.

In the meantime, head of Bali Nature Conservancy Agency, Budhy Kurniawan said that his department took a quick action to save the baby orangutan after receiving a report from quarantine department and aviation security officer. Bali Nature Conservancy Agency put the orangutan at Bali Safari Marine Park for a temporary period of time, as a step for recovery.

 

“we put him at bali safari because they have proper facility, there are also orangutans around the same age, next step we do is that we would check his DNA, to make sure his origin, whether from Sumatra or Kalimantan. We coordinate with the Police to return him home” said Budhy
